Nissan Sunderland (NMUK) first opened in 1986, on the site of a former airfield. The plant first opened with a small workforce that has grown considerably since it opened its doors. The site has been one of the highest-volume car plants in Europe for the last 40 years, with on average 500,000 cars a year being taken off the production lines.

History of Nissan in Sunderland
It's here at Nissan Sunderland that the first Nissan Bluebird for commercial sale was produced, back in 1986. At this location today, Nissan produce firm favourites like the Nissan Qashqai and Nissan Juke. The newest addition to the manufacturing line up is the All-New Nissan LEAF, first produced here in 2010. The All-New Nissan LEAF will be the first new high-volume car to be built in Britain since 2020.
It's here in Sunderland where Nissan are driving forward their Nissan EV36 Zero project, creating the world's first EV manufacturing ecosystem.
Nissan Sunderland Workforce
More than 6,000 members of the Nissan workforce are based in Sunderland, across the 362,000m2 site. The site is also home to its own solar and wind farms, and a vehicle test track. Additional facilities on site include a sports and social complex, and on site medical centre.
Over 39 years, the town of Sunderland has seen more than 11 million cars crafted by the team at the UK's largest car plant. On average, a new car has rolled off the production line in Sunderland every two minutes, every hour of the day for the last 37 years of operation.
